The complex of the Abbey of Santa Maria is a jewel of Cistercian architecture, an order of monks who settled in Rivalta Scrivia, in the Tortona area, in 1180. The building, between Lombard Romanesque and French Gothic, is magnificently embellished by a valuable apparatus of frescoes dating back to the second half of the fifteenth century, recovered during the restorations of 1941-42.
The frescoes see the intervention of Franceschino Boxilio: the castelnovese painter signs two works, the Saint Christofer of the fourth pillar on the right (dated 1490) and the two scenes with the Virgin, the Child and a Carthusian monk with the overhanging figure of Christ the Redeemer .
Next to the abbey, in the mid-seventeenth century, an imposing noble residence was built whose large arcades can still be admired today.
